A short introduction to the benefits of using Bayesian Data Analysis, with examples from the domains of biotechnology, microbiology, environmental sciences, food, and nutrition. Interesting for staff members, PhDs, postdocs and PIs alike.

Session details

The analysis of data is a central part of science, with data analysis methods being critical for its interpretation and deriving conclusions from it. The traditional approach focuses on the probability of data, given a hypothesis. In contrast, the Bayesian approach focuses on the probability of hypotheses, given the available data. The Bayesian approach is gaining in popularity because it is intuitive, forces researchers to show their assumptions in data analysis, makes uncertainty in the results explicit and pays attention to the prediction of future data. Moreover, it offers impressive visualisations to convey the findings. The goal of the workshop is to highlight the current possibilities and opportunities of the Bayesian approach for the VLAG community, i.e., staff members, PhD students, postdocs and PIs. Examples will be given in the domain of food, nutrition, biotechnology, microbiology, and environmental sciences.

The afternoon will start at 15.00 and will close with some drinks. It is meant to shortly introduce the Bayesian approach. Based on the interest during this introduction session, we will consider to organise a more elaborate workshop for you to get some hands-on experience with the use of Bayesian data analysis and to make a start on using this in your own research.
